O'Brien Named Managing Partner

Downey Brand LLP has elected Kevin O'Brien as its new Managing Partner. O'Brien began his three-year term on January 1, 2012. He succeeds Jeff Koewler who served as the firm’s Managing Partner from 2007 through 2011. Koewler, a prominent corporate attorney, hands over the reins of the 135-lawyer firm after a period of significant growth and geographic expansion. Downey Brand is currently the 39th largest firm in California with offices in Sacramento, Stockton, San Francisco, Roseville and Reno.

O'Brien is a well-known water rights attorney with clients throughout California and the western United States. His clients include cities, counties, water districts, wineries, ski areas and private developers. He has served as trial counsel in major water cases and represents clients in transactions involving the purchase and sale of water rights. O’Brien joined Downey Brand in 1985 after practicing law in Denver and Washington, D.C.  He is the former Chair of the American Bar Association's Water Resources Committee and a former member of the Executive Committee of the State Bar of California, Real Property Law Section.

O'Brien is active in the community. He currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of Capital Public Radio, Inc. and is a former president of the Eureka Schools Foundation.

"I'm honored and excited about taking over as Managing Partner at Downey Brand. The firm has achieved great things under Jeff Koewler’s leadership and I’m looking forward to taking us to the next level,” said O’Brien. “Our success as a firm stems from our adherence to the core aspects of Downey Brand’s culture—providing exceptional service to our clients in a cost-effective manner, personal integrity and service to the community. I look forward to continuing to build a dominant regional law firm with our talented and creative group of lawyers.”

O’Brien, who was raised in Vacaville, received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Davis and his law degree from the University of Denver. He and his wife Elizabeth Vigil O’Brien reside in Granite Bay with their three children.
