On October 15, 2024, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced that the California Fish and Game Commission (Commission) – the group charged with, among other things, setting regulations that CDFW is charged to enforce – unanimously approved naming the western burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) as a candidate for potential listing as a protected species under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA).
